Meeting Street Academy is able to achieve many of its goals because of the incredible efforts of our volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering to help further our mission, please click on the link to the left to learn about different volunteer opportunities.

For the safety of our students, staff, and volunteers, all volunteers must undergo a national criminal and sex-offender background check before interacting with any student.

Volunteer Opportunities

Mentor a Student

Through a partnership with “Be a Mentor” (a nonprofit organization that sets up mentor programs at Charleston County schools), Meeting Street Academy has created a mentoring program for our students. We are always looking for caring and dedicated individuals who are willing to serve as role models for our students. Mentors help their mentees set academic, personal, and career goals; encourage their mentees to explore areas of interest; discuss the importance of persevering and graduating from college; and introduce their mentees to new people and different experiences. We ask our mentors to have lunch with their mentees weekly or bi- weekly, as consistency and dependability are of the utmost importance for our students.

Share your Talents

At Meeting Street Academy we strive to introduce our students to as many experiences as possible. If you have a special talent (e.g. music, dance, theater, art, model airplanes, etc.) that you would like to share, our Extended Day program would like to hear from you. Please contact our Director of Extended Day for more information.

Read with a Class

Literacy is a primary focus at Meeting Street Academy. From day one we instill in our students a love of reading and books. If you also love to read, please consider reading to a class.

Administrative Help

We’re currently looking for interns to help with special administrative tasks throughout the year. There is a great deal of “behind the scenes” work that goes into running a classroom or a school. If you would like to help prepare materials for our classrooms or assist in the office, then this is the spot for you!

Continuing Education

Meeting Street Academy parents attend regular continuing education programs on topics ranging from developing healthy eating habits to dealing with behavioral issues at home; and from practicing prudent financial management to saving for college. If you have a particular area of expertise that could benefit our parents, please contact the school. Programs typically take place from 5:30 until 6:30 in the evenings.

Guest Speaker

Share your work and life experiences with our students as a guest speaker. Our students are learning about character traits that will keep them on the “Path to Success”. The Paths are gratitude, empathy, self-control, citizenship, grit, integrity, optimum, academic achievement , and curiosity. Choose a Path that inspires you and be a guest speaker at a 3rd – 5th grade assembly. Speaking engagements are about 20 minutes in length.
